Wynne Primary School is an Arkansas Reading First school utilizing a comprehensive literacy model based on research from Report of the National Reading Panel regarding effective strategies for teaching reading. Instruction during the literacy block addresses the five essential areas of reading, including phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. Components of the literacy block are familiar reading, shared reading, word study or phonics, and guided reading. Instruction is provided in whole group and small group settings in order to meet learning needs of all students. Writing instruction is implemented during the literacy block through modeled writing, interactive writing, and independent writing. English Language Arts are taught during the literacy block through reading and writing activities. Instruction and assessment are based on national standards and the Arkansas Curriculum Frameworks.
