Science Courses

PRE-AP BIOLOGY
Grades 9-10

This is a college preparatory course in the study of life. It deals with life at the molecular and multi-cellular organism levels and with the structural and functional aspects of each.

BIOLOGY
Grades 9-10

Characteristics unique to living organisms are studied in this course. The study begins at the molecular level, proceeds to the cellular level, and concludes with multi-cellular organisms, genetics, protist, multi-cellular plants, invertebrate and vertebrate animals, and ecology.

ADVANCED PHYSICAL SCIENCE
Grades 10-11

The two principal areas of study are chemistry and physics. These deal with basic structure of matter and the changes the matter undergoes with respects to energy. Knowledge of these helps the students to understand the physical world. Advanced students will be exposed to more in-depth studies and higher level math and thinking skills. It is recommended that students have successfully completed Algebra I before taking physical science.

PHYSICAL SCIENCE
Grades 10-11

The basis of this course is the study of matter and energy relationships making up the physical world. Emphasis is on the study of physical science as related to the student's own range of experiences. Additionally, there is a consideration of historical achievements, career paths, and the future of physical science.

AP BIOLOGY
Grades 11-12

Advanced Biology is a college preparatory course in biology. It is a continuation of the basic life sciences studied in general biology, but is more in-depth with emphasis on cells and protein synthesis. Emphasis is on the AP labs.

PHYSICS IC
Grades 11-12

This course if an applied physics course that prepares students for either colloege or training in high technology jobs. The course is based on the applications of the principles of mechanical, fluid, electrical, and thermal systems. It is heavily laboratory oriented. Physics concentrates on problem-solving math and hands-on hardware labs.

ADV PHYSICS
Grade 12

Physics is the study of mechanics and the principles of energy such as electricity, thermal, light, sound and magnetism. Laboratory investigations involve collecting, calculating, collaborating and analyzing data to solve problems. Physics involves detail word problems, which requires an understanding in Trigonometry. This course is definitely geared for the college bound student who plans on majoring in science, math, and/or engineering.
Prerequisite: Trigonometry or Pre-Cal with a C or better

AEROSPACE
Grades 11-12

This course includes the study of aviation and space. Students are provided with basic knowledge, skills, and attitudes about aerospace that enable them to function in tomorrow's society. This course is for local credit only.

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
Grades 11-12

This is a course for the non-college bound student. This course covers the relationships between organisms and their environment; the origin and management of natural resources; and the impact of humans on the environment. This course does not meet smart core curriculum.

CHEMISTRY
Grades 11-12

This course is designed for bot6h college and tech-prep students. This course deals with the substances that make up our environment and the changes that take place in these substances. This involves laboratory investigations and problem solving. This class emphasizes practical and real-life applications. This course will involve less math manipulations than Advanced Chemistry, but will require a good understanding of algebraic principles.

ADV CHEMISTRY
Grades 11-12

Chemistry is a laboratory course that studies the composition of matter and the changes that matter undergo. Labs will require the analysis and interpretation of data as well as possible statistical treatments. Chemistry requires mathematical manipulation for complete understanding of specific concepts. There is an emphasis placed on problem solving. This course is required for the college student who plans to major in the engineering, sciences or medical fields. This course is designed to prepare students for first-year college chemistry.
Prerequisite: C or better in Algebra I is essential
