Foreign Languages Courses

Mandarian Chinese I
Grades 9-12

Chinese I offers the opportunity to learn a language spoken by more than 750 million people in China and other countries in southeast Asia. Students will study the basic skills of listening, speaking, writing and reading Mandarin Chinese as well as learn about the culture of China. The class will be taught by a English speaking native of China certified to teach by the state of Arkansas.

Mandarian Chinese II
Grades 9-12

Chinese II will be taught during the 09-10 school year and completion of these courses will meet the foreign language requirement for the academic challenge scholarship and the requirement for graduation honors. The understanding of the Chinese language and culture will help prepare students to compete in the global economy of the 21st century.

SPANISH I
Grades 9-12

Spanish 1 offers the opportunity to learn a language spoken by millions around the world. Using TPRS method (Total Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling), students study the basic skills of listening, speaking, writing, and reading a second language. These classes enhance a student's understanding of Spanish-speaking people in our area, and increases one's enjoyment of traveling and communicating bilingually.

SPANISH II
Grades 10-12

Spanish II continues to build on skills obtained in Spanish I with emphasis on further vocabulary developing and communicating in advanced structures via TPRS method.
Prerequisite: Should have at least a B- average in Spanish I.

SPANISH III
Grades 11-12

Spanish III continues to build on skills obtained in Spanish II with further vocabulary development and strengthening proficiency in language via TPRS method. Students experience culture through exposure to authentic food, music, and crafts.
Prerequisite: Should have at least a B- average in Spanish II.

AP Spanish
Grades 11-12

AP Spanish Language is intended for students who wish to develop their proficiency in all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students who enroll should already have a solid knowledge of the language and should have attained a reasonable proficiency in listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. In this course, students will read literature, produce various forms of writing, and focus on advanced structure and improving listening and speaking abilities.
Prerequisite: A or B in Spanish III
