English Courses

ENGLISH 9 PRE-AP
Grade 9

This is an intensive study of literature. The major genres studied are satire, drama, and the epic. Students are required to do much independent reading, including one assigned novel that is to be completed before the first day of the course. Research techniques and essay development are taught at the beginning of the term, and compositions are required throughout the term. Writing assignments include but are not limited to essays and book reports. This is a preparation for Advanced Placement English.

ENGLISH 9 COLLEGE PREP
Grade 9

This course covers grammar and literature development. Paragraph and essay development are taught at the beginning of the term. The literature section includes a study of the short story, the novel Animal Farm, The Miracle Worker, the play Romeo and Juliet, and the epic The Odyssey. Students will also learn library and research skills by writing a research paper.

ENGLISH 10 PRE-AP
Grade 10

This thematic study of world literature includes such works as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Lord of the Flies, The Prince, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Death of a Salesman, Resurrection, and Antigone. Students relate to these great works through discussion and composition. Writing assignments include essays, book reports and a research paper. One reading assignment is to be completed before the first day of the course. This is a preparation for Advanced Placement English.

ENGLISH 10 COLLEGE PREP
Grade 10

This course consists of a study of varied literary selections, composition, and a review of grammar. Writing assignments include a book report, research paper, literature based essays and a Benchmark writing practice. Literature selections include short stories, poetry, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Antigone, Le Morte d' Arthur, and The Chosen.

ENGLISH 11 PRE-AP
Grade 11

The major sections of the study of American Literature are Calvinism, Romanticism, and Transcendentalism (Poe, Hawthorne, Emerson, Thoreau, Whitman, Dickinson); modern poetry (Frost), and modern novels (Fitzgerald, Steinbeck). Compositions related to the material and one research paper are required. One assigned novel is to be read before the first day of the course. This is preparation for Advanced Placement English.

ENGLISH 11 COLLEGE PREP
Grade 11

This American Literature Survey course includes an in-depth study of the novels The Scarlet Letter, The Great Gatsby, a play, The Crucible and various short stories and autobiographical writings. Writing experiences include short compositions, book reports, creative writings, and a research paper. A review of grammar and usage is done through daily language activities.

ENGLISH 12 ADVANCED PLACEMENT
Grade 12

This course involves critical reading of British literary works from several genres and periods - the Anglo-Saxons to the present. The focus of writing assignments is critical analysis, including a research paper, but students will have opportunities for creative writing as well. The Advanced Placement exam in English Literature and Composition is offered at the end of the course. Students are expected to read two assigned novels before the first day of the course.

ENGLISH 12 COLLEGE PREP
Grade 12

This course is a chronological study of British literature including Beowulf, The Canterbury Tales, Macbeth, A Tale of Two Cities, and The Importance of Being Earnest. Emphasis is placed on the origin as well as the development of the English language. Vocabulary development, grammar review and composition assignments are incorporated with literary studies. Book reports and a research paper are required.


CREATIVE WRITING
Grades 11-12

This is an elective course that develops creative writing principles. Students write different types of poetry and prose. The writing experiences in this class culminate in the publication of Flight, a literary journal. This course if for local credit only.


ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
Grades 9-12

This is a .5 credit course that covers interpersonal communications, listening, critical thinking, nonverbal communications, and public speaking. The development of public speaking skills is the focus of the course.
