In the early 1900s, the Wynne
Public Schools were located where the current Cross County Courthouse
stands. All grades were housed in one building, which was expanded several
times as the population of the town and school grew.
In 1950, Wynne High School
was built on its current location on East Jackson Avenue. The library
and science buildings were added 12 years later in 1962. In 1971, Childress
High School and Wynne High School consolidated. The media center and new
gym along with classrooms were added to the campus in 1980. The 1997-98
school year was filled with demolition and construction. During the 1998-99
school year, students were able to move into the new main building.
The student population is
approximately 930 students in grades 9-12. The Wynne High School staff
believe that all students can learn; therefore, they accept the challenge
to teach all students so that students can attain their maximum education
potential. The school's purpose is to educate all students to live and
work with all people, to adapt to change, to think critically, to appreciate
the arts, and to value a democratic society. The school commits itself
to educate for today and tomorrow.
The Wynne High School colors
are blue and gold based on the slogan used by the first basketball team:
"True Blue and Good as Gold." Our Alma Mater came from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Our mascot, the Yellowjacket
was adopted in 1920 by the athletic teams. The school Newspaper carries
the name YELLOWJACKET and the yearbook is the STINGER.
The population of Wynne is
about 10,000 people and is located in Cross County, which has a population
of approximately 20,000. Wynne is "The City With a Smile" and
